A man who deserves the bad fortune which besets him

Courting Shadows - Jem Poster

About a rather pompous church restorer, Stannard, who comes to a village to the local church and how he gets entangled in the people who live there, and the locals he employs. The story is set in an unspecified period which I took to be 1970s-1980s. A sense of menace grips early on and kept me reading. Stannard is enchanted by a local beauty and finds difficulty in keeping the work he is doing on track with the uncooperative men who are working for him. I really enjoyed this book about a man who, in my opinion, deserves all the trouble he finds himself in. There were a few weaker chapters in the middle about him suffering some unexplained serious illness but it gets back on track once he recovers and returns to the village.
